What's the Hillside Creative?
Hello, I’m Steph Anderson, and The Hillside Creative is my artistic outlet. Drawing and painting have been integral parts of my life for as long as I can remember, evolving and deepening over the years. I’m excited to have refined my craft to create pieces that I’m truly proud of. My inspiration stems from the stunning landscapes of Minnesota, particularly the Lake Superior region.
I’m especially drawn to the interaction between architecture, vehicles, and nature, exploring how human creations harmonize with the natural world. My artwork often reflects the places I love and my favorite modes of travel, capturing the unique juxtaposition of human ingenuity and the beauty of the outdoors.
Each piece is meticulously hand-painted with watercolor and gouache, reflecting my passion for detail and my deep connection to the natural world around me.
Why the Hillside Creative?
The name "The Hillside Creative" is a tribute to the journey that reignited my passion for art. My first home was on Duluth's East Hillside, a vibrant neighborhood that inspired me to start drawing and painting again.
Although I've since moved to a new space on top of Duluth's Hillside, where I now have the room to fully dedicate myself to my craft, the spirit of that original inspiration remains at the heart of my work.
Medium Information
What is Watercolor Painting?
Watercolor painting has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. Its origins can be traced to early civilizations where water-based pigments were used for decorative purposes. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and China, artists utilized watercolors for both art and practical applications, such as painting on papyrus or silk.
The technique saw significant development during the Renaissance, where artists like Albrecht Dürer and Leonardo da Vinci employed watercolor as a preliminary medium for their detailed drawings. However, it wasn't until the 18th century that watercolor emerged as a distinct and respected painting medium. The development of transparent pigments and advancements in paper quality during this period allowed watercolorists to explore the medium’s potential for luminosity and subtle color gradations.
Today, watercolor painting is celebrated for its versatility and the unique qualities it brings to art, including its ability to convey transparency, fluidity, and delicate color transitions. It remains a beloved medium for artists worldwide, admired for its expressive and spontaneous nature.
What is Gouache Painting?
Gouache paints are a popular choice for illustration due to their vibrant colors and versatile application. Their opaque quality allows illustrators to achieve rich, solid colors with excellent coverage, making them ideal for creating bold and striking visuals. Gouache can be used to build layers, offering both translucent and opaque effects that add depth and texture to illustrations. Its quick-drying nature facilitates rapid layering and adjustments, which is particularly useful in detailed and intricate designs. Additionally, the matte finish of gouache provides a distinctive look that stands out in both digital and print formats, making it a favored medium for book covers, editorial illustrations, and concept art.
